A Bill used to protect of public buildings as shelters from natural disasters by claims was signed into law.
Senate Bill 1316, Senator Ron justice and Rep. Fred Jordan, changes the State tort claims Act, by one of the exemption from liability for towns, cities, counties or other persons, public buildings up to citizens during open emergencies such as tornadoes.
"Given the number of natural disasters that Oklahoma each year experienced, it was important to get signed this Bill into law," said Justice, R-Chickasha. "Public bodies must not fear of lawsuits, because during the tornadoes or other natural disasters opened its doors to the public." "This is a win-win for Oklahoma citizens and public institutions who want to help their communities."
The legislator it is noted that SB 1316 public bodies as natural disaster shelters serve not required. The new law simply protects these entities that decide, let the public during such events from liability for injuries, the people may emerge, while in the building or be turned away, because the plant is full.
"This law fixes a problem, large public safety for Oklahomans all 77 counties, and I am pleased that made it through the legislative process as quickly", R-Jenks Jordan said.
The new law will come into effect 1 November 2012.
